Bali gets called the Island of the Gods, and after a week here you understand that it is less a compliment than a description. Offerings appear on doorsteps at dawn. Temples stand at the top of volcanoes, at the bottom of ravines and on cliffs seventy metres above the Indian Ocean. Very little of it is only scenery.
This eight-day honeymoon takes the island in two halves. The first three nights are in Ubud, inland among rice terraces, river valleys and temple compounds, where Bali is at its most cultural and its quietest. You stay in a five-star one-bedroom villa with its own private pool, on five hectares of terraced land belonging to the Ubud royal family, with rice fields, gardens and water channels running between the villas.
The final four nights move south to the coast, to a five-star beachfront resort on the Tanjung Benoa peninsula with a private stretch of sand, a spa, several restaurants and the flattest, easiest swimming on this coast. Both properties are five stars, and both are held in the room categories named in this itinerary rather than the entry-level ones.
Four of the eight days are privately guided, each with its own driver and licensed English-speaking guide, and departure times and durations are confirmed for every one of them, so you know in advance what kind of day it is. The rest are deliberately unstructured.
