This 14 day Japan itinerary is made for travellers who want to see far more than Tokyo and Kyoto. Over two weeks you move from the neon and shrines of Tokyo to a night inside a 1,400-year-old temple, the samurai streets of Kanazawa, a ryokan on the sacred island of Miyajima and the lantern-lit lanes of Kyoto, before a final night in Osaka.
Tokyo and a Night Inside Zenkoji Temple
Begin your 14 day Japan itinerary with three nights at Park Hotel Tokyo and a privately guided day through Meiji Jingu, Harajuku, Omotesando and the old-town streets of Asakusa. Then head into the mountains to Nagano, where you sleep in a shukubo, a traditional temple lodging within the Zenkoji precinct, share a vegetarian Buddhist supper and join the monks at dawn for the morning service.
Kanazawa, Samurai and the Thatched Village of Shirakawa-go
Kanazawa, a castle town that flourished as a centre of art and craft, is your base for three nights at Hyatt Centric Kanazawa. Ride into the mountains to the UNESCO-listed village of Shirakawa-go, with its steep thatched farmhouses, and spend a guided morning in the old samurai quarter, ending with a private viewing of a local family’s katana collection.
What You Will See on This 14 Day Japan Itinerary
On Miyajima, two nights at Iwaso, a historic ryokan with hot-spring baths, give you time with the island’s famous floating torii at Itsukushima Shrine before the deer-filled lanes empty in the evening. A short ferry ride takes you to Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park and the A-Bomb Dome.
In Kyoto you stay three nights at Noku Kyoto, walk the geisha districts of Gion at dusk, and spend a privately guided day at Fushimi Inari, Sanjusangendo, Nishiki Market, Nijo Castle and Nanzen-ji. Your final night is in Osaka, Japan’s food capital, high above the city at the Osaka Marriott Miyako Hotel.
