Q: When does the Alaska season run, and when should I book?

Princess sails Alaska from early May through late September 2027. The strongest weather and longest daylight fall between mid-June and mid-August; May and September sailings are quieter and priced noticeably lower. Book eight to twelve months out. Alaska is the one destination where waiting almost never saves money — the best cabins and the White Pass railway departures go first, and late inventory is what nobody else wanted.

Q: Which glacier will my sailing visit — Glacier Bay or Endicott Arm?

It depends on the ship and the departure date, and Sevira confirms it in writing before you deposit. Glacier Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage site with rangers aboard and two tidewater glacier faces; Endicott Arm is a narrower fjord with a closer approach to Dawes Glacier. Both are exceptional. If one matters more to you, tell us and we will select the sailing around it.

Q: Do I need a balcony cabin?

On most cruises, no. On Alaska, it is the single upgrade we recommend most often. You spend a full day glacier cruising and two more days on scenic coastline, frequently in cool or wet weather where a public deck is uncomfortable. A balcony turns that into private viewing. If the budget is tight, an oceanview on a lower deck is a better use of money than an interior with a specialty dining package.

Q: What do I need to pack?

Layers, and less than you think. A waterproof shell, a mid-layer fleece or down, comfortable waterproof walking shoes, gloves and a warm hat for the glacier day, and one smart outfit for formal night. Temperatures typically run 8°C to 22°C in the same day. Every Sevira Alaska client receives a full packing brief before departure.

Q: Do I need a passport?

Yes. This sailing begins in Canada and calls in the United States, so a valid passport is required for all guests including children. We check expiry dates against your travel dates as part of our booking process, but the document itself is your responsibility.

Q: Is this a good trip for families, or for a honeymoon?

Both, and they rarely get in each other’s way. Princess ships carry proper youth programming and the ports are genuinely interesting to teenagers — a train, a floatplane, whales. For couples, the balcony cabins, adults-only retreat areas and specialty dining make it an easy romantic week. Day 01 :

Vancouver, British Columbia (Embarkation)

About this Port

Canada Place sits at the foot of downtown Vancouver, which makes this the most civilised embarkation port in the cruising world — you can walk to your ship from a good hotel. Your Sevira travel designer will have arranged your pre-cruise night, your luggage handling and your pier transfer, so the day is yours until the 4:00 p.m. departure.

Sevira tip: arrive the day before. Always. A single delayed flight from Edmonton is the difference between a seven-night cruise and a very expensive week at home. We build the pre-night into every Alaska file for exactly this reason.

The ship pulls out under the Lions Gate Bridge in the early evening — be on deck for it. Dinner can wait twenty minutes.

Day 02 :

Scenic Cruising, the Inside Passage

About this Day

A full day threading the channel between the British Columbia mainland and the outer islands. This is the Great Bear Rainforest coastline: waterfalls off dark granite, humpbacks feeding, bald eagles working the shoreline, and almost no evidence of people. Most guests treat this as a sea day. We suggest you treat it as the first sight-seeing day, because it is.

Sevira tip: the best viewing is mid-morning and again in the long northern evening light. Bring binoculars — the ship will not have enough to lend you.

It is also the right day for the spa, the specialty dining reservations we have pre-booked, and the naturalist talks under the North to Alaska programme.

Day 03 :

Juneau, Alaska

About this Port

A state capital with no road in or out. Juneau sits between the water and the Juneau Icefield, and the whole town is a staging point for what is above and behind it — the Mendenhall Glacier and its visitor centre, Nugget Falls, the Mount Roberts tramway climbing straight out of the dock, and the humpback grounds off Auke Bay.

Sevira tip: Juneau is the best whale-watching port on the itinerary and the small-boat operators are meaningfully better than the large-coach options. With an afternoon call, we book the first departure after arrival and pair it with Mendenhall on the way back rather than doing them as two separate tours.

If helicopters and glacier landings are on your list, this is the port for it, and it is the one shore excursion worth booking the moment your deposit is in.

Day 04 :

Skagway, Alaska

About this Port

A gold rush town of about a thousand people, preserved almost intact from 1898, at the head of the Lynn Canal. The reason to come is the White Pass and Yukon Route — a narrow-gauge railway built into the side of a mountain, climbing nearly 3,000 feet in twenty miles through tunnels, trestles and the pass that broke the stampeders.

Sevira tip: sit on the left going up. We book the rail excursion directly and we book it early, because the good departure times close first and the train is the one thing on this sailing that guests regret missing.

With a long port day here, there is time for the railway in the morning and the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park boardwalk in the afternoon without hurrying either.

Day 05 :

Glacier Bay National Park or Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier

About this Day

The centrepiece. On sailings with a Glacier Bay call, the ship spends the better part of the day inside a 3.3-million-acre UNESCO World Heritage site with National Park Service rangers aboard, holding position at the tidewater faces of Margerie and Grand Pacific glaciers. On Endicott Arm sailings, the ship threads a narrow fjord past drifting ice to Dawes Glacier, which is closer, tighter and in some ways more dramatic.

Sevira tip: this is the day the cabin decision pays for itself. The ship rotates so both sides see the face, but a balcony on the correct deck means you watch calving in a robe with coffee instead of three-deep at the rail. We tell you which sailings get which glacier before you book, not after.

Dress warmer than the temperature suggests. The wind coming off a glacier face is its own weather.

Day 06 :

Ketchikan, Alaska

About this Port

Alaska’s first city coming north, built on pilings over Tongass Narrows, with the largest collection of standing totem poles anywhere — Saxman, Totem Bight and the Totem Heritage Center between them. It rains here, roughly 150 inches a year, and the town is entirely unbothered by that. So should you be.

Sevira tip: Creek Street and the Married Man’s Trail are a short walk from the pier and cost nothing. If you want one paid experience here, make it a Misty Fjords floatplane — it is the finest hour of flying in Southeast Alaska and it is weather-dependent, so we book it with a refundable window.

This is also the port for salmon and halibut fishing, and Princess will cook your catch aboard that evening through its Cook My Catch programme.

Day 07 :

At Sea, Southbound

About this Day

The last full day, running south through the Inside Passage. Whale sightings are common along this stretch and the light in late evening runs long. A good day for the final specialty dinner, the photographs you have not yet sorted, and the disembarkation paperwork.

Day 08 :

Vancouver, British Columbia (Disembarkation)

About this Port

The ship berths at Canada Place around 7:30 a.m. With an afternoon or evening flight there is comfortably time for Stanley Park, Granville Island or Gastown before the airport, and we will have arranged luggage storage so you are not touring with suitcases.

Sevira tip: many of our Alaska clients add a post-cruise leg rather than flying straight home — two nights in Whistler, or the Rocky Mountaineer rail through to Banff and a short hop back to Edmonton. Ask us; the pricing is usually better than it looks.
